Perry was enjoying his perambulation around the country and was pleased that heâd uncovered several discrepancies in the quartermaster stores that probably wouldnât have been noticed otherwise.
The days were shorter as winter approached but it had been unseasonably warm at the end of September â not quite an Indian summer, but definitely hotter than usual. Two letters from Clara had eventually caught up with him in the middle of October.
In the first, after explaining that sheâd lost his first letter, she entertained him with amusing anecdotes of her trials and tribulations as a newly qualified ATS driver. Sheâd been posted to Colchester and was driving a large lorry from one barracks to another in the region, collecting and transporting whatever was needed.
It was the second one that made him smile. This had been written just last week.
Dearest Perry,
Since I last wrote to you, Iâve been posted to Lincolnshire. Initially, I was still driving a lorry but Iâm about to become a dispatch rider.
You wonât believe what happened the other day so Iâll tell you. I picked up a very handsome sergeant and an ATS bombardier. She turned out to be a friend of my friend Grace, the one that I told you about â the one whose wedding blessing I attended in Chelmsford recently.
Then Sam, the handsome sergeant, was hit by a car and hurt his ankle and Ruth, Graceâs friend, asked me to give her a lift to his base just outside Lincoln on the back of my bike. What a small world it is. Weâve agreed that weâre going to meet up in London if we can in December.
I think you told me that you will be in Lincoln at the end of the month. Iâve been saving my leave and have seven days owing and could take it when you arrive. Would you be able to get a few days off too?
I know we said we wouldnât meet until you have finished doing whatever youâre doing but this seems like too good an opportunity to miss.
Clara had added the address of her billet as well as the telephone number where he could leave a message. Heâd not taken any free time since heâd started this jaunt and was probably owed two or three weeksâ back leave. As he didnât have to report to anybody, was a free agent more or less, he would definitely book into a hotel in Lincoln as soon as he got there.
He was naturally thrilled that heâd be meeting his beloved Clara a few weeks earlier than heâd thought but what was even more pleasing was the fact for the first time in their correspondence, sheâd addressed him as dearest. He occasionally sprinkled his letters with endearments but never overdid it.
He didnât confirm his arrival at whatever barracks he was visiting until he was actually on his way as he never knew how long it would take to complete his inspection. He couldnât speak to the rank and file â they wouldnât tell
